Saxophone Quartet No. 1

2018

Premiered on the 12th May, 2018 in the Blue Note, Amsterdam.

Program note: This piece began as a set of rhythmical and textural ètudes which were later adapted to a consistent piece. This piece has five different sections, each written around a different rhythmical mechanism:

Section 1 - Double Speed A simple double tempo change mid way through.

Section 2 - Phrase Length and Displacement A small motif from the first section is gradually extended and offset against the other instruments over time.

Section 3 - Four Against Three Against Six Three separate speeds are used in a poly-rhythmic combination.

Section 4 – Static. Static block chords provide a juxtaposing section.

Section 5 - Rotating Parts A single part which moves up through the instruments with each repetition, building to a climax.
